Have you been thinking about adding on to your home for some time now? As they always say, there’s no time like the present. Investing in a home addition comes with so many advantages for you, your family and potentially your wallet. Here are some great reasons to add on to your home:
Add Space: Perhaps the most obvious reason to add on to your home is to give yourself more space. Families are constantly growing, so adding extra space will allow yours to live comfortably under one roof. Sometimes, even a very small addition can yield big results. Adding just three or four feet to a small kitchen or bathroom can open up a world of possibilities.
House Your Family: Adding space in your home can open up the opportunity to bring extended family members to come stay with you. It’s no secret that kids are moving back home these days, so a home addition will allow room for them or for an elderly parent who might need assistance.
Extra Income: Choosing to add on additional space in your house could serve as a great investment, should you choose to rent out the unit to tenants. Additionally, if you’re looking to sell, a home addition could add value to your home during the resale process, where you’ll get a greater return on your investment.
Save Money Moving: Making any sort of renovation on your home is typically cheaper than moving. If you’re looking for a larger space to accommodate your growing family, consider a home addition! You’ll avoid the time of hassle of having to find a new house, and can customize your home addition to fit the needs and wants of your family.

Renovating your basement comes with many great benefits for you and your family. Not only will your usable living space increase, but a finished basement can also give you a great return on your home. Sometimes it’s hard to get past the limitations of a basement to see the greater picture at the end– the dark, damp and unfinished space can leave you feeling less than inspired to create something great for your family to relax in. But with a little creativity, and the perfect design team, you can give yourself the basement that you’ve always dreamed of. Here are some out-of-the-box renovation ideas for your basement:
Create The Ultimate Play Area: Children often relegate themselves to the basement to spread out their toys or watch TV. Why not turn your basement into the ultimate children’s play area? Fill the space with art supplies, building blocks and tons of games. You can even lay a colorful foam floor that resembles a puzzle piece for comfort and to give the room some personality, and paint the walls with chalkboard paint! Your children will have a blast getting lost in their imagination–just make sure to call them when dinner is ready!
Work It Out: Creating a home gym is one of the best ways to make sure you get your daily sweat on–without being bothered. Set up a treadmill, weights and some resistance bands to work out in the comfort of your own home. Fixing a television to the wall is also a good idea, so you can follow along to your workout videos, or to distract yourself from that cardio we all dread! Mirroring one side of the room creates an illusion of a larger space, and is a great way for you to keep an eye on your form and technique. You now have no excuse not to break a sweat!
Sip Some Bubbly: Do you have 20 bottles of Merlot that are aging to perfection with nowhere to store them? The dark and damp conditions of a basement make for the perfect setting for a wine cellar. Or perhaps you want to entertain your friends and family while enjoying a cocktail once in awhile. Your basement can be renovated to resemble a custom bar, equipped with all of your favorite drinks and decor. Never worry again about finding the ideal place to throw a party–with your new basement bar, it’s only one floor away!

Have you ever been in a room and found it peaceful and serene? Only to find that another place you went made you anxious and uneasy? Next time you’re somewhere that has you feeling a certain type of way, take a look around and notice one thing–the color! Colors have a profound effect on our mood. Whether it be a product or our surroundings, color accounts for 60 % of our response to an object or place. Choosing the right paint color for your decor can really have an impact on how you feel in that room. Here are some tips to make sure your red walls don’t actually give you the blues.
Start small: If you’re unsure where to start with color, try adding it in a small space like a powder room or hallway first.
Think about your mood: When selecting a paint color, think about the mood of the room. A bedroom should be calming and serene, while a basement man cave can handle a bolder color!
Pay attention to the lighting: When looking through paint samples and chips always think about the type of lighting you have in that room. A stronger color might be too bright when used in a room with direct sunlight, but can work well in a room with indirect light.
Test your color choice: Many paint companies sell small sample jars that you can take home and try out in your space. It’s a good idea to try before you buy, especially if you are adding some drama to the room, or want to go outside of your comfort zone. This will give you a chance to live with the color for a few days before making a commitment.
Think about the connecting rooms: When choosing a paint color for a space that leads into another room, take into consideration how those colors will go together.

Summer is right around the corner! Dust off that barbecue and get ready for days of grilling and entertaining in the sunshine. Now that you’ve had that new custom stone patio built, it’s time to complete your outdoor living space. With some thoughtful decor planning, you’ll ensure your area is inviting (and lasts!) for years to come. When choosing furniture, consider these long lasting materials– and always make sure to take a seat before you buy!
- Aluminum, plastic and PVC: If you’re looking for relatively inexpensive furniture that is easy to maintain, opt for these. The materials are also rustproof and lightweight, making them easy to move around.
- Steel and wrought iron: These heavy duty materials are great if you’re looking for something sturdy. Keep in mind that they need to be weatherproofed or painted periodically to avoid rusting.
- Wicker and natural grasses: One of the most common materials for patios is wicker because of the soft, natural look that it adds to any outdoor space. Don’t forget to treat it every couple of years with a resin finish to protect it from sun damage and other elements.
- Wood: Natural wood looks very attractive in an outdoor setting. It’s sturdiness adds to it’s comfort and is a great option when selecting patio furnishings. Woods like teak, redwood and cedar are weather-resistant, but should you opt for other types, make sure to regularly treat them with a preservative and UV protection.
- Cushions: No decor would be complete without some plush cushions. Choose ones covered in an all-weather fabric and filled with water-shedding polyester. Acrylic fabric resembles cotton, but dries quickly and resists fading and mildew, which is important when battling the elements.
- Don’t forget the shade: When a sunny heatwave hits, you’ll want to seek shade. Choose a weather and UV-resistant umbrella, which is breathable and waterproof.
