Investing in granite countertops is a great way to add a little luxury to your kitchen or bathroom. Granite is commonly thought of as being strong and resilient, but when it comes time to cleaning it you must proceed with caution. Harsh products and common household concoctions can actually do damage to the beautiful stone. But with a little extra care and attention, your countertops will shine on!
Here are the do’s and don’ts of cleaning granite countertops:
Do: Make sure your granite countertop is sealed. While granite is one of the more non-porous stones, unsealed granite will be at risk for soaking up oils, spills and stains. Unsure if your countertop is sealed already? Leave a few drops of water on the surface–if it beads up, your seal is secure. If the water is soaked up by the stone, it’s time to break out the sealant.
Don’t: Steer clear of harsh or abrasive cleaners and sponges. Products with ammonia or bleach will dull and weaken the sealant over time. Opt for a mild dish detergent diluted in water and apply it with a soft cotton cloth. And don’t forget to dry off the countertop completely afterwards! This will not only help prevent against water damage, but will eliminate streaks that dull it’s sparkle.
Do: Wipe up spills as soon as you notice them. This should go without saying, but acting fast will maximize the life of your stone!
Don’t: Don’t worry too much about disinfecting. A well sealed countertop is impervious to bacteria. The daily sanitizing combination of a mild dish soap and warm water should be adequate enough to take care of any germs. If a stronger disinfectant is desired, mix a 50:50 solution of water and 91% isopropyl alcohol, leave it on for 3-5 minutes and voila!

If you’re planning a kitchen remodel, why not go green? Choosing eco-friendly materials and appliances will not only be beneficial to the environment, but can help save money on your monthly bills as well. Sounds like a no-brainer to us! Here are some things to remember when choosing components for your new kitchen, while reducing your carbon footprint.
Opt For Sustainable Cabinets: Cabinets made from wood and wood products certified by the Forest Stewardship Council are produced using sustainable forest management practices and feature formaldehyde free glues and finishes. Check product literature to ensure your cabinets meet these guidelines.
Choose Eco-Friendly Flooring: Cork and linoleum are both made from renewable resources that make them sustainable. They look good and are durable, but require occasional maintenance.
Go Green With Your Countertops: When choosing a countertop that is environmentally conscious, there is a large variety to choose from. Look for ones that are made from recycled or sustainable materials and have low-toxicity binders from an eco-friendly manufacturing facility. The last thing you’ll want to prepare your food on, is a countertop that’s covered with a formaldehyde finish.
Don’t Forget the Appliances: This is where you’re really going to see a difference in your lowered monthly bills. Choosing an energy efficient dishwasher and refrigerator will reduce energy consumption, saving money on your utility costs. Energy Star appliances are tested and rated to be the best brand across the board.

Once the demolition is underway, you’ll quickly learn how the kitchen really is the epicenter of the home. While dining out every night sure sounds like an ideal plan, the expense could be tapping into your remodeling budget. But with a little preparation, you will survive–the temporary disruption will be well worth the reward of a beautiful new kitchen. Follow these tips to help get you through!
Set up a makeshift kitchen: Designating one dust-free area in your home as the temporary kitchen will make it easier to prepare meals or eat your takeout. Equip it with your microwave or toaster, and set up a mini fridge for the necessities. A portable folding table doubles as a counter top and always opt for paper plates and cups to avoid having to wash the dishes.
Use clear storage containers: For items commonly used, storing them in clear container makes them easier to find. Items that are used infrequently should be boxed up and moved away until after the reno is complete. This is also a good time to get rid of things that are cluttering up your cabinets and not needed anymore.
Plan your remodel wisely: If your schedule permits, planning a kitchen renovation in the warmer months is a smart idea as it’s barbecue season. Throw some burgers on the grill and eat on your patio outside to avoid being in the way of the construction.
Set a schedule: Everyone knows that there has to be some wiggle room in setting a remodeling schedule. That said, you’ll want set up a bulletin board in your temporary kitchen to keep track of the progress. Taking pictures, making checklists and creating a remodeling calendar is a good way to stay on track and keep frustrations low.
The professionals at Landmark Design are trained and ready to walk you through the entire kitchen remodeling process with minimal interruptions to your lifestyle.

Summer is right around the corner! Dust off that barbecue and get ready for days of grilling and entertaining in the sunshine. Now that you’ve had that new custom stone patio built, it’s time to complete your outdoor living space. With some thoughtful decor planning, you’ll ensure your area is inviting (and lasts!) for years to come. When choosing furniture, consider these long lasting materials– and always make sure to take a seat before you buy!
- Aluminum, plastic and PVC: If you’re looking for relatively inexpensive furniture that is easy to maintain, opt for these. The materials are also rustproof and lightweight, making them easy to move around.
- Steel and wrought iron: These heavy duty materials are great if you’re looking for something sturdy. Keep in mind that they need to be weatherproofed or painted periodically to avoid rusting.
- Wicker and natural grasses: One of the most common materials for patios is wicker because of the soft, natural look that it adds to any outdoor space. Don’t forget to treat it every couple of years with a resin finish to protect it from sun damage and other elements.
- Wood: Natural wood looks very attractive in an outdoor setting. It’s sturdiness adds to it’s comfort and is a great option when selecting patio furnishings. Woods like teak, redwood and cedar are weather-resistant, but should you opt for other types, make sure to regularly treat them with a preservative and UV protection.
- Cushions: No decor would be complete without some plush cushions. Choose ones covered in an all-weather fabric and filled with water-shedding polyester. Acrylic fabric resembles cotton, but dries quickly and resists fading and mildew, which is important when battling the elements.
- Don’t forget the shade: When a sunny heatwave hits, you’ll want to seek shade. Choose a weather and UV-resistant umbrella, which is breathable and waterproof.
